Incident at Vicinity of Fort Smith, NT (Conflict - potential, ATS operating irregularity)


1999-08-19: FAB 954, a B737, was enroute from Yellowknife to Edmonton at FL 330 and was near Fort Smith when it conflicted with BAW 48, a B747, also at FL 330 and northbound from Seattle to Heathrow. FAB 954 was not radar identified although BAW 48 was identified. The a/c got no closer than 29.8 miles. NavCanada reported that a Fact-Finding Board is likely. OPI - ANS and Airspace UPDATE TSB reported that the controller had cleared FAB954 a B737 to FL330 before it was radar identified. The controller on duty went for a break and when the relief controller took over the 737 was radar identified at FL330 29.8 NM from the 747. Non- radar identified aircraft are to be given 45 NM of separation.
