Incident at Thompson, MB (Conflict - potential)

Summary

1999-07-22: CAV 2559, a Saab 340, was inbound to Runway 23 at Thompson from the south, while C-FYMV, a DHC-2 Beaver, was inbound from the north to the waterbase and was 3 NM SSE of the airport. Both a/c were provided advisories by FSS. The pilot of C-FYMV indicated he would be crossing the approach path for Runway 23 outside of the Hotel beacon, 3.4 miles from the threshold. The pilot also reported that he had the Saab 340 in sight. CAV 2559 joined left base at 2 miles but the crew reported that they did not have the other a/c in sight. CAV 2559 turned final and crossed behind the other a/c with about 1/4 miles lateral and 200 feet vertical separation. It appears that C-FYMV crossed the approach path within 2 miles of the runway, not 3.4 miles as planned. OPI - System Safety
