Accident at 9 NM S of Morden, MB

1999-07-20: The pilot of C-FYFY, an Air Tractor 301, was turning in preparation for his second application pass. The a/c was loaded with about 290 gallons of fungicide and 50 gallons of fuel. The a/c was descending down the slope of an escarpment in the turn and when the pilot attempted to level out, the a/c continued to descend. He released his load, but the a/c continued to descend and struck some small trees and the ground, coming to rest in a field. The pilot was wearing a four-point harness and was not injured. The a/c sustained substantial damage from the impact and ensuing fire. The pilot reported that the a/c probably stalled as it encountered "dead air." The temperature was about 25 degrees C with high humidity. Varying air currents have been associated with escarpments and farm fields. OPI - System Safety
