Incident at Calgary, AB

Summary

1999-07-15: While on approach to Calgary, the crew of N227FA, a Swearingen Metro, noticed that the cold air outlets (eyeball vents) in the cockpit were blowing warm air and there was a faint oily smell in the a/c. Just prior to touchdown, smoke began to come out of the vents on the left side of the cockpit. The crew proceded with the bleed air smoke emergency drill, shut off the bleed air switches and opened the fresh air vents. The landing was accomplished without further incident. As soon as the a/c cleared the runway, it was noted that there was a light haze in the cabin. The flight crew briefed the passengers, explaining that the smoke was due to an air conditioning problem. Maintenance determined that the left air cycle machine had failed. OPI - System Safety
