Incident at Calgary, AB

1999-07-22: The pilot of C-GSAZ, a PA-31, was inbound to Calgary on an IFR flight from Rocky Mountain House when he reported an engine failure. The flight landed uneventfully at 2359Z. The nature of the engine problem is not known. OPI - Maintenance and Manufacturing UPDATE TSB reported that the pilot experienced some engine roughness while in a hold near Calgary. He requested priority to land and when changing throttle positions, the roughness cleared up. Maintenance was unable to determine the cause but suspect a faulty fuel rate controller. The a/c has been returned to service and a new fuel rate controller has been ordered. UPDATE M. & M. reported that the incident was discussed with Slave Air PRM. Engines had 195:0 hours total time at the time of the incident. PRM mentioned both fuel rate controllers from L/H and R/H engines were swapped side to side after returning to Slave Lake. There have been no other incidents since then. PRM talked with overhaul agency and their response suggested that this was quite normal, due to the type of gasket glue used internally. Occasionally pieces of this glue will break away and lodge themselves within the fuel rate controller, which could create some excitement.
