Incident at WHITEHORSE/ ERIK NIELSEN INTL (CYXY) (Incursion - runway - pedestrian)

Summary

2000-04-06: Whitehorse Tower staff observed 4 unauthorized pedestrians on Taxiway E approaching Runway 01/19. ERS was called out and a fuel truck in the vicinity was also asked to intercept them. As it turned out, they managed to get most of the way across the threshold of the runway before they could be stopped and returned to a proper location on the field. They were European pilots who were unaware of proper procedures. OPI - Aerodrome Safety UPDATE Aerodrome Safety reported that the Whitehorse Airport, Supervisor of Safety and Security investigated the item and confirmed that the four individuals were European pilots that were unaware of the airport configuration and procedures. He confirmed that the aircraft rental company (that had rented an aircraft to the four) and all other tenants at the airport are aware of the proper procedures. RECOMMENDATIONS: Aerodrome Safety believes that the site continues to emphasize the importance of airside safety with the airport tenants and the shortening of the 01 end of the runway over the summer will together significantly improve airside safety at the airport.
