Accident at Jean Lake Winter Strip, AB (Aerodrome - runway or taxiway surface condition)

1999-07-02: The pilot of the Britton Norman Islander BN-2A-9, C-FTAM, was enroute to Fort McMurray, AB when he decided to stop at a winter strip to pick up some company material that had previously been left behind. The strip was dragged twice successfully to determine if the surface was firm enough for a landing. On the third approach, a landing was carried out, and after a ground roll of about 75 to 100 feet the Nose Wheel sunk into the soft surface and was bent backwards. The aircraft came to a stop substantially damaged. There were no injuries to the pilot. OPI - System Safety
