Accident at Indian Head, SK

1999-06-22: The pilot of C-GKJE, a Cessna 172 RG, was on a VFR cross-country flight to build time for a commercial licence and while on approach to Indian Head, he encountered marginal VFR weather. He landed beside the runway on soft ground and after examining the gear after landing, discovered that the nose wheel was flat. A local AME carried out repairs to the wheel. The pilot departed for Saskatoon and on landing, he experienced severe nose wheel shimmy. On inspection of the nosewheel compartment, several rivets were found to be sheared. The damage to the a/c is currently being assessed and more information will be available. OPI - System Safety UPDATE Maintenance and Manufacturing reported that the aircraft was inspected in Saskatoon by an Inspector, who determined that the nose gear structure suffered considerable damage. The aircraft was operated by a renter at the time of the accident. A flat tire was all that the pilot had reported to the Flying Club as a defect. The local AME that performed the work was not employed by an AMO, and no log entries were made. The Flying Club has agreed to amend their MCM Technical Dispatch Procedures. Enforcement has been notified for further investigation.
