Incident at EDMONTON CITY CENTRE / BLATCHFORD AB (CYXD) (Dangerous goods/hazardous materials)

1999-07-29: Chinook 216, a Fairchild Metro III, was being loaded for a cargo flight at City Centre Airport in Edmonton when a crew member noticed a package that was leaking mercury in the cargo area. The spill was very small and was easily contained, but the appropriate agencies and airport security were notified. It was reported that the operator brought in some maintenance personnel from their base in Calgary to lift the floorboards of the a/c to inspect for contamination and the individuals who might have come in contact with the substance were assessed at hospital as a precaution. OPI - Commercial and Business Aviation (Dangerous Goods) UPDATE CBA reported that as a result of the discovery of a leak of Mercury, UN 2809, a Class 8 corrosive liquid, in an undeclared dangerous goods package tendered to UPS in the USA for delivery in Canada, two pilots from Sunwest International were exposed to Mercury vapour while unloading the freight from their aircraft. Further, two CBA Dangerous Goods Inspectors were also exposed to the same vapour. CEDA Reactor, a specialist cleanup company was hired to clean up the spilled Mercury at CYXD. It is reported that this company was able to clean up approximately 50 ml of Mercury. The aircraft was flown to CYYC by the same crew and upon their arrival, more Mercury was visible in the main cargo compartment. Another cleanup company, HAZMAT was hired to clean up the remainder of Mercury which amounted to 6 to 10 droplets. The two pilots and two Dangerous Goods Inspectors were referred to a medical doctor to determine the extent of their exposure. The total amount of leaked Mercury has yet to be determined. Contact with M&M at CYYC will be established to inform of the corrosion factor.
