Incident at Cambridge Bay, NT

Summary

1999-05-18: CDN 446, a B737 with a crew of 4 and 53 passengers, was enroute from Edmonton to Resolute Bay and near Cambridge Bay when the crew reported that a mentally unstable passenger attempted to start a fire in the cabin. The crew diverted to Cambridge Bay, where the passenger was taken into custody by the RCMP. There was no reported damage to the a/c. TSB has been informed and more information will be available. OPI - System Safety UPDATE It was reported that the passenger was a 41 year old male from Quebec travelling as a tourist. While enroute to Resolute Bay, he became unruly and attempted to set fire to his boarding pass and the back of a seat. The crew was unable to immobilize him with on board restraints, so the Captain decided to divert to Cambridge Bay. The individual was taken into custody by the local RCMP. He will receive a psychiatric assessment at Alberta Hospital and appear in court in June.
