Incident at Hay River, NT (Incursion - runway - animal)

Summary

1999-05-12: The crew of FAB 125, a HS 748, rejected their takeoff on Runway 13 at Hay River because of a coyote on the runway. The crew stopped, backtracked to the threshold and departed without further incident. OPI - Aerodrome Safety UPDATE Aerodrome Safety reported that the Airport Manager looks after the Bird and Wildlife program. He was made aware of the animal incursion the following day. His incident update is provided below. They have an ongoing Bird and Wildlife Control Program that will adapt if the problem increases. RECOMMENDATIONS: No further action. We were made aware of this incident which happened after hours at the Hay River Airport. At this time I do not plan on making any changes to our bird and mammal control plan, as the airlines using this airport are aware of our hours of operation and they have agreed to pay for a call out should we be required to come out after hours. Our Bird & Mammal Control Plan consists of, but is not limited to: Summer program: Staff hours are staggered to ensure that a runway inspection is done for FOD, PAPI and Bird & Mammal control etc. one half hour before every scheduled departure/arrival during the published hours of operation. As well, we keep the grass around the runway to approximately six inches, which discourages rodents and gulls from congregating on airport premises. During migratory seasons (spring & fall) we have a continuous watch program in affect (during hours of operation) as well, FSS advises us as soon as they see any flocks of birds on airport property. Should this occur again, we will have to review our after- hours approach in operations with the air carriers.
