Incident at CALGARY INTL AB (CYYC) (Rejected take-off, Incursion - runway - vehicle, Conflict - potential)

1999-05-14: The driver of Staff 65, a Calgary Airport Authority truck, was cleared to cross Runway 34 at Taxiway Juliet, but for unknown reasons, stopped on the runway. The crew of CKN 329, a Swearingen Metro IV, had been cleared for takeoff on Runway 34 and were instructed to abort. The a/c had not travelled very far in the takeoff roll and the crew was able to stop without difficulty. OPI - Aerodrome Safety UPDATE Aerodrome Safety reported that the CAA met with both the driver and his supervisor and have discussed this incident. The driver stated that he had permission to cross Runway 34, but upon observing FOD on the runway, decided to do a 180 so that when he would receive permission to go back on the runway to retrieve the FOD he would be closer to the actual location. Appropriate action was taken under the CAA Demerit Point System which provides for demerit points, suspension of driving privileges and mandatory retest.
