Incident at Thompson, MB (Aerodrome, runway or taxiway shutdown)


1999-04-28: The pilot of SGK 300, a Cessna 402, landed on Runway 23 and shortly after, advised FSS that the a/c had a flat nosewheel and he would require assistance. FSS attempted to contact company operations to advise that a radio-equipped vehicle would be required to assist the pilot, and shortly after, a company tractor appeared and drove out to the disabled a/c. It was reported that the tractor was not radio-equipped and did not have an escort. The vehicle was on the runway for about 5 minutes assisting the a/c in exiting to the apron. The runway was unavailable for 17 minutes and advertised as closed by airport advisory. One inbound a/c was delayed for about 10 minutes. OPI - Aerodrome Safety UPDATE Aerodrome Safety reported that the tractor driver assumed an escort was not required because the runway was closed. The airport has airside vehicle operating procedures in place. The airport operator and the RCMP are addressing this incident with the company involved.
