Incident at Winnipeg, MB

Summary

1999-04-23: PAG 117, a Swearingen Metro II, was on approach at Norway House on a flight from Winnipeg (YWG) when the crew reported that the right main gear would not extend. The crew cancelled IFR and did a fly-by over the airport where persons on the ground confirmed that the right gear was not down. The crew was re-cleared back to YWG and they carried out a fly-by of the Tower and then proceeded west of the airport, where they apparently extended the gear manually. The crew returned to do one more flyby and it appeared now that the gear was fully down. The a/c landed safely on Runway 36 at 0117Z. TSB was informed and more information will be available. OPI - System Safety UPDATE TSB reported that the crew was able to lower the landing gear with radio assistance from company maintenance. The gear was lowered by altering the sequence of steps in the published emergency gear procedure. Inspection of the right landing gear revealed damage on the outside of the inboard gear door, consistent with an impact from ground equipment. The damage had bent the door, partly jammed the outboard gear door and compromised the operation of the door opening mechanism. Tire marks were visible on the inside of the doors where the gear had partly pushed the gear doors open from the inside. Gear swings with the doors removed confirmed normal operations.
