Incident at Vicinity Manitoba - U.S. Border

Summary

1999-04-14: RCC Trenton received a SARSAT hit from an activated ELT in the vicinity of the Manitoba - U.S. border and tasked CASARA to search for the signal. CASARA dispatched an a/c and a ground vehicle but were unable to locate the source of the signal. RCC then dispatched a CC-130 Hercules from CFB Winnipeg and the crew homed the signal to a private grass strip, where the operator of the parked a/c, C-GYVS, a Bellanca 7ECA, saw the Hercules overhead and turned off the ELT. The total search time for the CASARA vehicle and a/c, and the Hercules was 9.6 hours. OPI - System Safety
