Incident at PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE / SOUTHPORT MB (CYPG)

Summary

1999-04-09: The pilot of Sundance 19, a Slingsby Firefly, was conducting circuits at Southport when he declared an emergency because of a "burning" smell in the cockpit. The pilot landed a few minutes later without difficulty, turned off all the electrics and taxied to the ramp. Maintenance examined the avionics/electrics and took apart the heater system, but could find no evidence of fire or smoke residue. With the warmer weather in southern Manitoba, the bugs have started to come out, and maintenance thinks that some of them might have been injested into the heater ducts and emitted an odor as they got cooked. The a/c has been returned to service. OPI - System Safety
