Incident at Grande Prairie, AB

1999-04-12: CDR 1257, a DHC-8, departed Grande Prairie for Edmonton and shortly after takeoff, the crew reported shutting down the left engine, and declared an emergency. They indicated that they were returning and requested that the ERS vehicles be in attendance when the flight landed. The a/c landed without further incident at 1319Z. The nature of the engine problem is not known. OPI - Maintenance and Manufacturing UPDATE M. & M. reported that the engine in question has had a history of low oil pressure readings and the operator has not been able to determine the cause. The engine has flown on other a/c and the problem has followed it wherever it was installed. CDR had previously forwarded the engine to Pratt & Whitney for inspection and repair and it was subsequent to this last visit to P & W for repair that it was installed on this a/c. Knowing the engine's history, the test flights following installation were conducted by CDR's Chief Pilot for the DHC-8 and the test flights were uneventful. The engine has subsequently been removed and will be torn down with representatives from P & W Canada overseeing the process at the CDR base in Calgary.
