Incident at Calgary, AB (Communication navigation surveillance/air traffic system)

Summary

1999-03-23: At 1945Z, all the Calgary TCU frequencies and hotlines failed. There were three arrivals that held at the outer fix and two other arrivals in the TCA on vectors for the active runway, plus one departure that was airborne on a SID. The comm failure lasted for two minutes before normal operations were restored. It was reported that there were no losses of separation, but there was "plenty of anxiety". This was the second occurrence of the problem in the last two days (CADORS 99C0193). NavCanada technical staff were advised and they are looking into the problem. OPI - ANS and Airspace UPDATE ANS and Airspace reported that the problem was traced to an AT&T system that had a power outage. There have been no further outages and the system is being monitored.
