Incident at Calgary, AB (Weather - visibility, Electrical problem)

Summary

1999-03-11: The local weather in Calgary on the evening of March 10 was very poor with visibilities from 1/8 to 1/4 of a mile in freezing fog, and single runway operations meant reduced flow rates. Beginning at 0411Z, several power bumps caused the runway lights to fail and the trouble was traced to a City of Calgary substation which affected a portion of the city. Power was not interrupted long enough to activate the airport backup diesel generator, so as a precaution, an electrician was dispatched to force the runway lights onto diesel power until the substation problem was resolved. There were no missed approaches due to the runway lights being unavailable. OPI - System Safety
