Accident at Calgary, AB


1999-03-11: DAL 1612, a B727 with 96 people on board, was landing on Runway 34 at Calgary at 0622Z in very poor visibility and reportedly, the a/c was off the centreline as it approached touchdown. When the crew attempted to correct, the right wingtip struck the runway and the a/c rolled left and struck the left wingtip on the runway. The crew did not report anything unusual at the time, but about 50 minutes later, the Airport Duty Manager informed ATC that the a/c had sustained damage during the landing. TSB has been informed and an investigator from the Edmonton office is enroute to examine the a/c and speak to the crew. The initial information is that there is damage to both wing tips, both leading edge slats and the underside of the wings. There were no injuries to the crew or passengers. Weather at the time of the occurrence was: vertical visibility 100 feet, 1/2 mile visibility in freezing fog and light snow. OPI - System Safety
