Incident at Edmonton, AB

1999-06-29: CDR 1154, DHC-8, departed from Runway 02 at Edmonton for Fort McMurray and shortly after takeoff, the crew informed ATC that they had shut down one engine and were requesting an immediate return. Priority was given to the crew and they were vectored for landing on Runway 20. Two arriving and two departing a/c were delayed during the occurrence. ERS was on standby as CDR 1154 landed safely on Runway 20 at 1854Z. OPI - Maintenance and Manufacturing UPDATE TSB reported that the crew observed engine oil pressure dropping to the red zone and the generator caution light illuminating. They carried out a precautionary engine shut down. M. & M. reported that the a/c was ferried to Calgary where the AC generator was replaced and the a/c returned to service. An SDR (D83-72-08) has been submitted to Transport Canada. UPDATE There has been a correction to SDR:DH8-72-08, dated March 01/99. Aircraft C-GETA, s/n: 186, had to do an engine inflight shutdown shortly after departing Edmonton (YEG). Maintenance inspection found low oil quantity, filters flagged and the #2 A.C Gen. inop. The previous report states that the required filters were changed, oil topped up and ground runs completed successfully and then the aircraft was ferried to Calgary (YYC). When in actual fact maintenance in YEG replaced the neccessary filters, topped up the oil, replaced the AC GCU and replaced the #2 AC Generator. The aircraft was then ground checked as serviceable and POSITIONED to Calgary (YYC) - not FERRIED, as previously stated.
