Incident at CALGARY INTL AB (CYYC)

Summary

1999-02-24: At 1420Z, a balloon was observed by a pilot of an a/c about 15 miles southeast of Calgary at 7,000 feet ASL. The balloon was also observed on primary radar - it did not have a transponder and the pilot was not in communication with ATC, although the balloon was inside Class C airspace. It was monitored by ATC and subsequent reports at 1445Z placed the balloon at 11,500 feet ASL and 20 miles southeast of the airport. The balloon's registration was not obtained, but it was described as a grey- purple colour with blue stripes. This is the second similar balloon incursion inside Calgary Class C airspace this week (CADORS 99C0123 in which the crew of an Airbus 300 took evasive action around another balloon).
