Incident at Foster Lake, SK

1999-02-23: C-GRBB, a Cessna 210, was on a VFR flight from McArthur River to Prince Albert with just the pilot on board when the engine failed and the pilot successfully force-landed on Foster Lake. The pilot was not injured and there was no reported damage to the a/c. La Ronge Aviation dispatched a Cessna 185 to pick up the pilot. No other details are available concerning the cause of the engine failure. OPI - Maintenance and Manufacturing UPDATE TSB reported that the pilot was returning to Prince Albert from a business meeting in McArthur River and while the a/c was in cruise flight at 9,500 feet, the pilot noticed some roughness in the engine. The engine then began to lose power and the pilot was unable to maintain altitude. Several minutes later the engine seized and the pilot was able to carry out a forced landing on Foster Lake with no injury to himself or damage to the a/c. The pilot noted some oil on the side of the cowling and combined with the noises made by the engine during the occurrence led the pilot to believe that the turbocharger failed in flight. The engine may have injested some parts from the turbocharger which resulted in engine stoppage. UPDATE M. & M. reported that the AMO who examined the engine found a failed number 3 cylinder exhaust valve. The turbocharger turbine and housing were found to have extensive FOD damage, which may have been the result of exhaust valve debris ingestion. A teardown report at a later date will confirm the actual cause of the failure. The a/c is still at Foster Lake awaiting the installation of a replacement engine.
