Incident at 75 NM W of Winnipeg, MB

Summary

1999-02-02: CDR 1333, an F28, departed Winnipeg (YWG) for Regina with 18 people on board and as the a/c was climbing through FL 280 for FL 310 about 75 miles west of YWG, the crew declared an emergency when they received a fire indication in the right engine. The crew suspected major damage in the engine and requested vectors to Runway 13 at YWG. ERS was on standby as the flight landed at 1801Z. Initial information is that there was no fire on board and the fire indication may have been related to an oil spill inside the nacelle. TSB has been advised and more information may be available. OPI - Maintenance and Manufacturing UPDATE TSB reported that the crew noticed the number 2 engine begin to vibrate significantly, so they shut it down and following procedure, discharged the fire bottle. No evidence of fire was found after landing, but subsequent inspection revealed oil in the cowling. A bearing failure is suspected.
