Incident at Edmonton, AB

Summary

1999-01-20: ABX 172, a DC-9, departed Edmonton (YEG) at 1807Z on a scheduled cargo flight to Anchorage and when the a/c was about 40 miles northwest of YEG, the crew reported an unspecified mechanical problem and advised they were returning. The flight landed without incident at 1831Z and did not require ERS. The same a/c departed YEG again at 2312Z and shortly after takeoff, the crew reported an engine fire indication and declared an emergency. ERS was called out and the a/c landed safely at 2318Z. TSB has been advised and more information will be available. OPI - System Safety UPDATE TSB reported that the first problem was the result of a clogged oil filter in the number 2 engine. The a/c was serviced at YEG and re-dispatched. On the second attempt to depart for destination, the crew received a fire indication in the same engine. The a/c fire warning system was operating on the number 2 engine with the "B" fire warning loop deferred and only the "A" system operational. The fire warning ceased when the throttle was retarded below 1.2 EPR. The crew believes that there may have been some oil spillage in the engine compartment because an examination of the number 2 engine revealed that there was no fire.
