Incident at Saskatoon, SK (Aerodrome, runway or taxiway shutdown)

Summary

1999-02-01: CDR 1324, an F28, landed on Runway 27 at Saskatoon at 1415Z after a flight from Winnipeg and the crew advised Tower that the a/c had a hydraulic problem. They exited Runway 27 onto Runway 15, where the a/c stopped and a tow was arranged, because the crew reported no nosewheel steering. The a/c was disabled on Runway 15 for about 35 minutes until it could be towed to the terminal. OPI - Maintenance and Manufacturing UPDATE M. & M. reported that the crew noticed a significant drop in hydraulic quantity from the utility system while enroute to Saskatoon. As per the company's SOP, the crew followed the checklist and off-loaded the pumps. Re-engaging the pumps just prior to landing, the number 2 utility pump did not come back on line. The loss of all hydraulic pressure in the number 1 system occurred during landing and resulted in the loss of nosewheel steering. Maintenance inspection found the number 2 engine utility pump leaking badly from the shaft seal. The old pump (S/N AH-37284) was replaced with a new one (S/N AH-37258C), the system replenished and ground runs were successful. The a/c was then released to service. The company has submitted an SDR to Transport Canada.
