Accident at Iqaluit, NT

Summary

1999-01-15: KBA 491, a Beech Airliner, departed Iqaluit on an IFR flight to Broughton Island, and shortly after takeoff the crew heard a loud bang from the right side of the a/c and found that a forward baggage door had come open. They elected to return to land, and the crew noticed no adverse control of the a/c. The a/c landed uneventfully and there were no injuries. Montreal TSB has been advised and more information will be available. OPI - System Safety UPDATE TSB reported that after the a/c landed, the crew saw that the forward baggage door had opened and an oil can had exited the a/c, striking the propeller. The propeller sustained substantial damage and required replacement. In addition, the engine will have to be examined to determine if any internal damage was done.
