Incident at 50 NM N of Calgary, AB (TCAS alert, Conflict - loss of separation)


2000-05-17: C-GKSC, a Beech 90 King Air, was enroute from Grande Prairie to Medicine Hat at FL 230 and ATC cleared the crew to climb to FL 250. At the same time, DAL 1630, a B737, was enroute from Salt Lake City to Edmonton at FL 240 and on a converging path with C-GKSC. The crew of DAL 1630 reported receiving a TCAS resoultion advisory and they proceded to climb to FL 247. The controller apparently realized the loss of separation at about the same time as the TCAS RA was received and was preparing to give instructions to the crews to maintain the standard 5 mile lateral and 1,000 feet vertical separation. The two a/c passed with 600 feet vertical and 3 miles lateral separation. NavCanada will conduct an internal investigation into the occurrence. OPI - ANS and Airspace UPDATE ANS reported that NAVCANADA held a fact Finding Board concerning this occurrence.
