Incident at 15 Miles East Charlottetown PEI

1999-10-27: CGCYL PA31 was on a charter flight from Montreal to Grindstone and after landing the crew discovered that in order to get fuel they would have to rent a truck and go into the town to buy a drum of fuel. The crew calculated that they had enough fuel to fly to Charlottetown and still have at least 30 minutes reserve. About 35 miles from Charlottetown the # 2 engine stopped. The crew selected fuel cross-feed and restarted # 2. However, a short time later both engines started to lose power. Fearing that both engines would stop, the crew shut down the # 2 eingine and turned off the fuel cross-feed. The # 1 engine operations returned to normal. The aircraft was still out over the water at this time so the crew turned the aircraft towards land. Once over land they sighted a golf course and set up for a precautionary landing but when they got closer they saw that it was unsuitable. They flew over the shore line but there was no suitable landing area. While flying over the highway looking for a field large enough to land, a break in the vehicle traffic occurred and they carried out an uneventful single engine landing on the highway. The crew reported that they had 4 hours of fuel when they left Montreal and that the flight time from Montreal to Grindstone was 2.5 hours. They also reported that at the time of the occurrence the left fuel gauge was reading one-quarter and the right fuel gauge was reading about one-eight. TSB case closed, TSB file # A99A0150
