Accident at Capstan Island, Labrador

Summary

1999-09-17: C-GCDN ASTAR350 enroute Mary's Harbour to L'anse- au- Clair ( Labrador ), encountered fog patches and three quarters to one mile reduced visibility. The pilot elected to continue the flight at 500 feet above ground level and follow the road along the shoreline. As the helicopter approached a sharp turn in the road near the community of Capstan Island, the aircraft entered a thick wall of fog hanging over the rising terrain. The pilot was unable to maintain outside references and lost control of the helicopter. The driver of an automobile observed the helicopter descend and strike the road directly in front of him, coming to rest on its side in the ditch. The pilot and passenger exited uninjured.
