Accident at 6 nm North Charlottetown

Summary

1999-09-03: CFSND CHINOOK Ultralight VFR made a forced landing in a hayfield 6 nm NNE Charlottetown. Aircraft landed with minor damage. Nil injuries. RCMP on scene. Update: At about two thousand feet, six miles north of Charlottetown, the Rotax 503 engine stopped. The attempted re-start was unsuccessful. The pilot then set up for an approach to a hay field; however the pilot later realised that the field was too far. He then altered his approach to land in a potato field. The aircraft landed at about a thirty degree angle to the furrows, which bent the left main axle, and flattened the right tire. This was the only damage. The pilot stated that he would have easily made the intended field had the engine been idling; however, the stopped three bladed propeller significantly increased the drag, and decreased the glide performance. The pilot reported that after the forced landing there was no fuel in the carburettor bowl. He has since replaced the fuel pump diaphragm and the pulse line, and the aircraft is now operating normally. TSB Case closed File # A99A0120
