Incident at Wabush NF


1999-08-17: CGNIE PA31departing Wabush for Quebec City taxied for departure, was given the Airport Advisory and told to standby for IFR Clearance. FSS called Gander ATC for Clearance but ATC did not have copy of outbound Flight Plan. Pilot advised he had filed that morning through Kangirsuk QC (CYAS). FSS went back to ATC with information and then received Clearance. FSS tried to pass Clearance to aircraft but was told to Stand-by. FSS scanned the field looking for the aircraft and observed the aircraft airborne off Runway 01. FSS advised ATC that the aircraft had departed without advising he was rolling or departing VFR. Pilot was advised to contact ATC and pilot stated he had told FSS of his intentions to depart VFR. NIL TSB
