Accident at Goose Bay, 103 NM WSW, North Labrador

Summary

1999-07-27: N185HC C185 on floats was reported overdue in the area of Southern Labrador at 2147Z. RCC requested assistance from ACC'S and FSS in the area which might have had contact with the aircraft. Gander advised at 0530Z that aircraft had been located on a hill at position 5159,3N 062W. Pilot reported as being O.K. and being airlifted out. T.S.B. Evaluating Update: On June 19th, N185HC Cessna 185, enroute from Baie-Comeau to Minipi Lake, Labrador experienced an engine failure, attempted to glide to a small lake and crashed into a heavily wooded area. The pilot, being the sole occupant, intended to fly from Minipi Lake to Goose Bay on June 20th but was reported missing June 21th. Fire signals were spotted and ELT signals were picked up by Search & Rescue. Pilot was transported to the hospital and was later released. Upon contacting the owner it was revealed that the aircraft had five hours of fuel on departure from Baie -Comeau and had been airborne for two and half hours when the engine lost power.
