Incident at Big Cove NS

1999-05-31: CGLAF HU369 clipped a power line in the Big Cove area. Aircraft landed safely with nil injuires to pilot. Damage to aircraft being assessed. TSB evaluating. Update:The aircraft was preparing for a water bucket demonstration and had overflown the area looking for obstructions. The pilot had noted the Power Line running across the mouth of the cove east of the landing area. The pilot landed the helicopter at the camp and shutdown the engine to give a safety briefing to the camp personnel. After the briefing, the pilot connected the water bucket and proceeded out over the cove to pick up a load of water. The first load was picked up near the North shore of the cove and the Take off run and climb out was to the East Southeast into the wind and parallel to the Wire Crossing the mouth of the cove. The pilot noted that the water bucket had not completely filled and returned further East where the water appeared deeper. After picking up the load the pilot noticed that the wind had shifted around more to the East. The pilot commenced the take off run and climb out to the east and during the climb out the pilot saw a wire splash on the water and suspected that there had been a Wire Strike. The pilot returned immediately to the camp and landed safely. Examination of the helicopter revealed that two of the main rotor blades exhibited minor damage. These blades were removed and sent to an overhaul facility for assessment. The only other damage was to the tip cap of the starboard stablizer. TSB File # A99A0072
