Incident at Near Stephenville NF

Summary

1999-05-12: UAL906 B777 advised diverting to Gander due to "Funny Smell" in the cockpit. It was reported that the smell was similar to Kerosene. Flight commenced fuel dump. Flight landed safely at Gander 0420z with ERS standing by. No emergency declared. TSB case Closed. Update: The smell was reported to have been concentrated in the area of Door L2 and R2. Thorough inspection and testing of the aircraft and its systems failed to locate the source or reproduce the smell. A replacement aircraft was brought in to transport the passengers on the continuation of their trip and the occurrence aircraft was returned to New York. The aircraft exited Canadian Airspace without any reappearance of the smell. TSB File A99A0041
