Incident at EDMONTON / VILLENEUVE AB (CZVL)

Summary

1997-12-16: The pilot of C-FFXO, a Cessna 185, was picking up his a/c from an AMO at Villeneuve, where it was being serviced, and was flying it back to his home base. The pilot taxied from the east side of the airport for departure on Runway 16, but the pilot stopped at the intersection of Taxiways A and B, turned left onto Taxiway A and departed from the taxiway. Tower staff communicated to the pilot on the radio after takeoff and informed the pilot of what happened, and the pilot was apologetic. He apparently got confused and mistook the taxiway for the runway. There were no other conflicting a/c at the time. System Safety will be contacting the pilot to discuss the incident.
