Incident at Edmonton, AB

1997-12-08: C-GOMG was on a local IFR training flight and was established on vectors for an approach to Runway 12. Prior to interception of the localizer, the pilot requested a straight-in NDB approach, so the pilot was given a straight-in NDB approach clearance to Runway 12, fly present heading until intercepting the final approach course. The controller observed C-GOMG turning left, away from the final approach course and continuing the descent to 3400 feet ASL, and on track toward a known obstacle. The controller issued instructions to the pilot to turn to the south and away from the obstruction. No other a/c were inconvenienced. OPI - Licensing (RAERL)
