Incident at Stony Rapids, SK


1997-12-03: ABS 279 departed Stony Rapids for La Ronge at 0151Z, and shortly after takeoff, the crew experienced a very rough running left engine, with debris emanating from the exhaust stack. The crew shut down the engine and returned to Stony Rapids, where they landed safely at 0205Z. Initial assessment by maintenance indicates a failed bearing which caused massive internal damage to the engine. There were 3200 hours on the engine with a normal TBO of 8500 hours.
