Incident at Vicinity of CYR 205, AB


1997-10-06: ACA 296 departed Calgary for Regina, and at 2241Z, the crew made contact with the Alaska controller who vectored the a/c because of traffic, and cleared the a/c to FL 330. At 2243Z, the controller then cleared the flight direct to the Empress VOR, but no reply was heard from ACA 296. Despite several attempts over the next 10 minutes, no contact could be made with ACA 296 until 2256Z when communications were re-established with the crew on Calgary Departure frequency. By this time, it was too late for the a/c to avoid entering the Restricted Area CYR 205. A severe vector to the a/c minimized the incursion to 4 miles. Attempts to contact Suffield Range Control prior to the incursion were also unsuccessful, and after the incursion took place, Suffield were eventually contacted and the incident made known to them. Suffield indicated that the range was not active at that time, and they would take no further action. A subsequent conversation with the Captain of ACA 296 could not determine how the a/c ended up back on Departure frequency and off the frequency used by the Alsask controller. The Captain indicated he would file a report with the company on the incident.
