Incident at 100 W of Winnipeg, MB

1997-09-10: ACA 100 was enroute from Vancouver to Toronto and about 100 miles west of Winnipeg when the crew informed ATC of the failure of the starboard engine. The flight received priority handling and diverted to Winnipeg where it landed safely on Runway 18 at 2337Z with ERS on standby. No other a/c were delayed by the incident. It was reported that the passengers were flown to Toronto on another a/c. More details will follow. UPDATE About 100 miles west of Winnipeg, the crew of ACA 100 received clearance to climb from FL 370 to FL 390. When they set climb power, the starboard engine N2 went to 0% and the engine had some vibration. The crew shut down the engine and diverted to YWG. Examination of the engine revealed that the right engine cowling blow-out doors were open, with some damage to the cowling, and fuel, oil, and hydraulic fluid leaking from the engine. Maintenance found a mechanical failure in the starboard engine accessory drive gearbox.
