Incident at 5 N of Whitecourt, AB

Summary

1997-08-13: The pilot of C-FVGV was on a local VFR flight with one passenger, when he encountered an engine failure and was forced to make a landing on Highway 32, some 5 miles north of the Whitecourt airport. It was reported that the problem occurred when the pilot attempted to switch fuel tanks, and the engine quit at that time. He was unable to get a restart and landed safely on the highway. The pilot arranged to have a maintenance engineer look at the engine and no problems could be identified. The a/c had adequate fuel on board and the pilot was able to start the engine, so with the assistance of the local RCMP who blocked off traffic, the pilot took off from the highway and flew the a/c back to Whitecourt.
