Incident at Norman Wells, NWT

Summary

1997-08-11: C-FKOK was on a VFR flight to an outfitters camp near the mountains, with only the pilot on board, when the weather began to deteriorate and the pilot decided to go VFR on top to avoid clouds. The pilot called Norman Wells FSS 66 miles south at 11,000 feet to request a DF steer to get back under the cloudbase. The pilot was using GPS for navigation, but could not see a break in the cloud cover and needed assistance. The pilot continued to climb to avoid convective clouds and reported at 12,500 and 15,700 feet nine miles south of Norman Wells. A break in the clouds was finally located to the east, and the a/c was able to get down and subsequently landed at Norman Wells at 2137Z.
