Incident at Saskatoon, SK

Summary

1997-08-08: KFA 270 was enroute from Edmonton to Winnipeg and just west of Saskatoon when the crew advised ATC that they had a smoke warning in the cargo area of the a/c. The crew diverted to Saskatoon where the a/c landed without incident at 0425Z with ERS on standby. ERS stood down at 0435Z. Maintenance reports that the cargo smoke detector was faulty. The unit was replaced and the a/c put back in service. UPDATE When the smoke warning came on in flight, the crew could find no evidence of smoke, but diverted to YXE as a precaution. After landing and while taxiing, the warning light extinguished. The a/c was checked and released for service. The operator reports that they had a similar problem with another cargo-converted B727, and the problem was solved with a modification to the air conditioning duct in the area where the cargo door was installed. The operator has scheduled the same modification to C-GKFC.
