Accident at Olds, AB

1997-06-04: The pilot experienced problems with the canopy in flight and elected to make a forced landing in a field about 4 miles northwest of Olds. The a/c nosed over landing on soft ground and sustained some damage which apparently is repairable. The pilot suffered a broken nose and a gash on his forehead, which required treatment at the Olds hospital. The incident was reported to the RCMP by the pilot's wife at about 11:30PM local time and the actual time of the occurrence is not known. UPDATE During the initial climb at about 400 feet AGL, the pilot noticed that the canopy was not securely fastened on one side. In the process of trying to lock it, the canopy flew open, causing considerable drag, so the pilot conducted a forced landing on his farm field. During the ground roll, the nose wheel sank into the soft turf, and the a/c overturned, causing substantial damage.
