Accident at La Ronge, SK

1997-05-26: The a/c departed on Runway 35 at La Ronge, VFR for Pinehouse Lake, SK and moments after retracting the gear at an altitude of about 200 feet, the pilot reported a loss of engine power. He landed straight ahead on the runway, but unfortunately with both the stall and gear warnings sounding, he forgot to lower the gear. This resulted in a gear-up landing which damaged the propellor. The pilot had done a run-up prior to departure and was satisfied that the engine was operating normally. UPDATE During taxi and run-up, the engine was misfiring, but after a high speed taxi and further run-up, the pilot thought that the a/c was airworthy. Shortly after lift-off the engine lost power and the pilot carried out a forced landing on the runway. With the gear-up landing, the a/c sustained damage to the propellor, belly and possibly the engine. The a/c was lifted, its landing gear extended and towed from the runway. The pilot believes that the problem resulted from fouled spark plugs. FURTHER UPDATE Maintenance found that the #4 exhaust push rod and housing were bent, likely a result of a sticking exhaust valve.
