Incident at CALGARY / SPRINGBANK AB (CYBW) (Conflict - near collision (VFR or IFR))

Summary

1997-05-16: CFC 2122 was eastbound at 5500 feet ASL about 8 miles SW of Springbank and C-GDGP was westbound in the same vicinity. At the time the a/c passed, CFC 2122 called Calgary VTA and they were in Class G airspace. No radar target was observed until an SSR code was assigned, then radar identification was established. C-GDGP was climbing and in contact with Springbank Tower. A short time later, C-GDGP contacted VTA, however no mention of the occurrence was made until later. When ATC was informed, C-GDGP stated that they considered it a near miss and that they would be following it up. When the incident occurred, CFC 2122 was in airspace where contact with ATC is not required and no service was being provided. C-GDGP was being provided with advisory service by the Springbank Tower.
