Accident at Deloraine, Manitoba

Summary

1997-04-07: The pilot of the Bellanca 7GCBC Citabria was practising night circuits as part of his training toward his commercial pilot licence. He departed Deloraine, Manitoba, completed a circuit and turned on to final approach about one mile from the threshold of runway 17. As the pilot was descending to land, the aircraft struck the ground about one-quarter mile from the runway. The passenger suffered minor injuries, but the pilot was not injured. The aircraft sustained damage to its propeller, landing gear, and one wing tip. There is no VASIS available at Deloraine. The pilot reported that the runway lights were serviceable, but that the area around the airport was very dark and he did not have a good visual reference as to his height above ground.
