Accident at 20 M N Lethbridge, Alberta (Aerodrome - runway or taxiway surface condition)

1997-07-04: The commercial student departed Lethbridge, Alberta for COLK, a local private strip. He knew the owner and had been into the strip many times before in a Cessna 150. He conducted an inspection by flying overhead and saw that the snow had melted off the runway, and that there were still snowbanks around the edges. The runway looked dry. The east-west runway has an easterly downgrade. On landing mud flew up into the wing from the wheels. The pilot attempted a takeoff westerly (uphill) and rejected due to poor performance. He taxied to the end, turned around and took off downhill. By the time he decided to reject, there was insufficient runway remaining to stop. He applied left rudder to avoid a slough at the end of the runway, hit a snowbank and flipped over. There were minor injuries reported by the pilot (muscle/back soreness) and a passenger had a head ache. The passenger was only using a lap belt. There were three SOB.
