Incident at Gander Oceanic

Summary

1997-08-21: BAW223 B777 enroute London to Washington FL350, at 1827z aircraft reported reaching FL360. There was no clearance issued to BAW223 by Gander or Prestwick. The pilot advised he had requested FL360 through Prestwick ACC was denied and was passed identification of traffic at FL360. BAW223 subsequently heard the traffic report level at FL370 and assumed he could climb to FL360. Pilot admitted mistake and apologized.
