Incident at Gander Oceanic (ATS operating irregularity)

Summary

1997-06-18: At approximately 1520z Gander ACC Shift Manager contacted Gander Tower to confirm the route issued to N754CX. This was done but there was no way to confirm, at that time, that the clearance on the strip was in fact what was issued to the aircraft. The Technical Duty Manager (TDM) was contacted and the tape procured. Subsequently it was determined that the Tower Controller had issued coordinates 53 North 15 West as opposed to 52 North 15 West which was on the strip. N754CX was operating IFR in the enroute phase of flight in Oceanic airspace. Weather was not a factor. Prior to contacting the Tower for confirmation, Gander Oceanic had become aware of the error and issued an ATC Insruction to avoid a Gross Navigational Error. Separation was not lost.
